Expo ' 99
from Indianapolis, IN, USA, September
22-26
All prices in US dollars.

Audio Products International (API) debuted the new Athena line of loudspeakers. Each
speaker is sold as a two-piece unit, but consumers can purchase the monitor and subwoofer
separately. From left to right: the S-1 monitor ($250 pair) with P-1 subwoofer ($250
each), S-2 monitor ($375 pair) with P-2 subwoofer ($375 each), and S-3 monitor ($600 pair)
with P-3 subwoofer ($600 each). Availability will be in the beginning of 2000.

The S-3 and P-3 fit together using a "hot-shoe" coupling device. Although each
monitor has a matching subwoofer, any S monitor can be used with any P subwoofer.

Another Canadian company, PSB, unveiled their Image series loudspeakers. There are ten
models in this series. Designer Paul Barton is shown with the $369-per-pair model 1B.

Gary Pelled (left) and Anthony Gallo proudly display the new powered subwoofer that is
intended to mate with their impressive Nucleus Micro loudspeakers. This subwoofer will be
available for purchase in January 2000 and will retail for $750.

Gary Pelled is shown holding the massive woofer driver used in the new powered sub.

Despite the large size of the woofer, the other five speakers that make up the Gallo
home-theater system are the Nucleus Micro spheres that retail for only $300 per pair.

The Anthem AVM-1 surround processor (with tuner) will be released in the first quarter of
2000. An interesting feature is the ability to download software upgrades via the
Internet. Retail price is estimated to be less than $3000.

Audiophile System showed the new FMJ series by Arcam. Shown are the A22 integrated
amplifier ($1999), CD23 CD player with 24-bit Ring DAC ($1999), P25 amplifier ($1399) with
Castle loudspeakers.

Is it the iMac of TVs? Philips showed their new 13" color television with built-in
analog clock. Retail price is $249.

More iMac colors? B&W unveiled their new LM1 loudspeakers, which retail for $350 per
pair.

Another product seemingly from another time, the new JBL Studio Series loudspeakers
include the model S312 floorstanding speaker ($499 each) and S-Center loudspeaker ($299
each).

California Audio Technology showed the Miramar subwoofer (left, $5700) and Tiburon
loudspeaker ($12,950). CAT speakers use Avonite as part of their cabinet construction, and
it is reportedly harder than Corian.

Back to the old days. CB Electronics showed some innovative design with their retro-style
televisions. Modeled after the 1958 Philco Predicta TV, the Holiday (shown right) uses an
RCA picture tube and retails for $1699. The television in the yellow-frame cabinet is
their own design and is a two-piece system with the tuner in the separate enclosure.

Also part of API, Energy Loudspeakers displayed their new Encore multichannel loudspeaker
system, which consists of five main speakers (front LCR and rear LR), as well as a
subwoofer. Total system price is $1500.

Leading Energy's design team is John Tchilinguirian, shown holding the Encore Model 1.

Ian McArthur of Audio Plus Services is shown with the new DreamVision DLP projector. Price
is estimated to be under $10,000 and availability will be around Christmas.
