The Best for Show Reporting
Coverage of CEDIA
Expo ' 99
from Indianapolis, IN, USA, September
22-26
All prices in US dollars.

Linn showed their new $599 Centrik center-channel
speaker that can be under or on top of a TV.

Linn's $1995 Classik is an integrated CD player, tuner and amplifier that is available in
a wide variety of colors.

Linn also showed their computer-based, full-bandwidth streaming audio player. This is a
prototype model and pricing is unavailable. Delivery is expected in the second quarter of
2000.

It's a dream home-theater room...

...for Barbie perhaps. This little model was part of the presentation from Cleopatra Home
Theaters, a manufacturer of full-size theaters for homes.

We remarked many times that the plasma displays were greatly improved over previous shows,
and this Marantz unit was no exception. The PD4290D retails for $13,999 and is HDTV ready.

Juro Matsumoto, Marantz's director of product planning and export marketing, holds the
VP8000 progressive-scan DLP projector. The unit is expected in November with pricing
around $9000.

Marantz's SR19 120Wpc x 5 surround-sound receiver supports all current surround formats
and retails for $1699.

Marantz's audiophile components include (from top down) the DR17 CD player/recorder
($1599), ST17 tuner ($599) and PM17 integrated amplifier ($1199).

Panasonic's new upscale $2995 DVD-H1000 progressive-scan DVD player boasts
"Audiophile Grade Components." Of course, it supports Dolby Digital and DTS
formats, but surprisingly, it doesn't support the new DVD-Audio standard that the company
will be introducing in lower-priced machines.

Parasound's AVP1800 surround-sound preamp/processor retails for $1195.

CEDIA's become a very large and popular show that attracts many in the audio press. Doug
Schneider stands with Stereophile's Jonathan Scull.

Revel showed the Performa loudspeakers that now form a complete home-theater system. All
prices are current estimates as all models are not quite available. From right to left are
the F-30 ($3500 per pair), M-20 (stand-mounted speaker, $2200 per pair), B-15 powered sub
($2700 each), S-30 surround speaker ($2700 per pair). In the very back is the C-30
center-channel speaker ($1700).

A closeup of the C-30 center channel shows a very high-quality finish.

Showgoing is VERY hard work, and this one, as they say in the movies, is a wrap. Doug
Schneider relaxes in the First Impressions Palais lounger priced at $2950.
