SoundStage! LIVE Event - Kimber DiAural Circuit

At a private session in an unmarked room on the eighth floor, SoundStage! attended a demonstration of Ray Kimber's new DiAural process. A circuit that is claimed to undo the Doppler distortion that is present in all signals recorded with microphones as well as improve power handling, the simple patent-pending DiAural circuit can be used in any dynamic speaker with two or more drivers -- electrostats are out -- and can replace the crossover network entirely. The speakers used for the demo were, according to Kimber, "good but that's it." He admitted that the circuit's effects were more pronounced with better speakers and ancillary equipment.

What did we hear? Exemplary space and definition coming from the small, non-descript speakers. The bass also seemed to belie the woofer's size. However, having heard an unfamiliar system in an unfamiliar room, we can't make definitive observations as to the circuit's overall effect. What he heard was promising though.

Kimber will license the circuit to other companies instead of manufacturing DiAural speakers himself. He said he would have perhaps a dozen licensees before the end of the month, and that some of these companies would have products ready for demonstration at CES 2000.
