Coverage of HI-FI '99 from Chicago, USA -- May 12-16, 1999
Immedia's new Revolution turntable with Immedia RPM tonearm and Lyra Parnassus cartridge gave 24/96 DADs at least an even race in the Avalon/Cardas/Muse room. The price of the turntable has not yet been determined.
Poh Ser Hsu is shown with the new $995 Hsu Research VTF-1 powered subwoofer. The VTF-1 has a single 12" driver with dual passive radiators and 800W amp. According to company literature, the VTF-1 "will not hop around like some other subwoofers" because of the unique driver/radiator arrangement.
mbl played a complete top-of-the-line system that included the 101D Radialstrahler speakers. Price? A cool $130k.
Joe Skubinski holds a tangle of new JPS Labs products, including the budget-priced GPA universal power cord ($149), Ultra Conductor HDTV video/digital cable ($79/one-meter cable), and JPS Labs bulk speaker wire ($1.50/foot).
Custom Entertainment, Inc., dealers for RBH Sound, showed the RBH Signature series speakers: the 1266-SE (left, $2600/pair in black, $3200 in any of 30 different wood finishes) and 1010-SE subwoofer ($1050 in black, $1459 in wood finishes) are shown here. All RBH SE speakers feature aluminum-cone woofers.
Also from Custom Entertainment, Inc. comes (top to bottom) a Faroudja DVP-2200 video line doubler/tripler ($8000), ada Cinema Reference processor/preamp ($9600 in chrome, $8000 in black), and ada PTM-1260 12-channel amp that's bridgeable to six channels (6x150Wpc at 8 ohms; $4499 in chrome, $3999 in black). If your monitor is clear enough, you can see Doug Blackburn in the chrome faceplates.
Inside the TacT Millennium Mk II ($10,290). The circuit board on top with the large chip marked "TacT" is the Mk II upgrade module, which is an easy, no-soldering-required replacement.
The Millennium Mk II made spacious and highly resolved sound as part of a simple four-box system -- two Dali speakers, the Millennium and a run-of-the-mill Pioneer DVD player.
More digital goodies from TacT. On top is the new RCS 2.0 room-correction preamp that's 24/96 ready; below it is the older RCS 2.2 room-correction system ($5000). |
