Coverage of HI-FI '99 from Chicago, USA -- May 12-16, 1999
Linn used eight of the 500-watt Klimax amps (approximately $20,000/pair) to drive their Keltik speakers to great musical heights, creating a soundstage that was literally wall to wall and floor to ceiling. According to Linn personnel in the room, visitors often thought the banks of hanging amps were "some kind of ribbon driver."
One of the most eye-catching speakers of the Show, the sleek and silver mbl 311D (around $3500/pair), is a product that adheres to the company's "Triple-P Technology," which means paying special attention to "pressure, power and phase." mbl switched between a system with the 311D and another conspicuous speaker, the 101D Radialstrahler.
We're teasing you here -- the KR Enterprise "Kronzilla" integrated amp is currently "produced industrially...for a dealer/distributor promotion." The colossal KR-1610 tube used in the amp carries a big price -- $1300 each.
Doug Schneider and Jeff Joseph along with Joseph Audio's newest speaker, the $15,000-per-pair Pearl, which is named after Joseph's mother.
Alan Yun of Silverline Audio stands between his two newest speakers, the Sonatina ($3495/pair) on the left, and Sonata ($5000/pair) on the right. Both use dome midrange drivers and sounded very impressive.
Herron Audio's new M150 solid-state mono amplifiers ($5300/pair) provide 150 watts each and run very cool to the touch -- almost as if they aren't even on. |
