SoundStage! LIVE Standout Room - Art Audio USA, Divergent Technologies, Chang Lightspeed, Reference 3A

There were plenty of combinations of high-efficiency speakers and low-powered SET amps at the Show, and the best demonstration of them that we heard was in the room being manned by Tash Goka of the audio-distribution company Divergent Technologies. The new and chrome-licious Art Audio Jota amp ($7350) drove the crossoverless Reference 3A Royal Master speakers ($5000/pair) to levels that seemingly matched those heard anywhere else. A Copland preamp and CD player, Chang Lightspeed power conditioners and RoomLens products finished the system.

But maybe Goka stacked the deck by playing a beautiful recording of Sinéad O'Connor singing the Curt Cobain song "All Apologies." Although they heard the demo on different days, both Doug Schneider and Marc Mickelson were impressed with the effortlessness and behind-the-wall depth on display. The system also deftly avoided the Palmer House curse -- a bump in the 60Hz-80Hz range that was the bane of so many setups -- without sounding lightweight down low.
