LIVE Standout Room - Quintessence Audio, Vandersteen, Audio Research, Basis, Graham, Benz
Micro, Musical Surroundings, MIT |
Chicago-area
dealer Quintessence Audio put together a system that had power and subtlety in abundance.
Vandersteen Model Five speakers ($9800/pair) were driven with Audio Research Reference 300
amps ($23,990/pair), Reference Phono ($5995) and brand-new Reference Two line-stage preamp
($9995). Source components were a Basis turntable with Graham tonearm and cartridge and a
Sony SACD player. MIT cabling completed the system.
As you would expect, analog and SACD
sounded exceptional, but the Sony player was also very impressive spinning a Box
Scaggs CD, proving that the old digital format can still make some music. This system was
a unanimous Standout choice, impressing the entire Show coverage crew.
