SoundStage! Standout Room - Hegel

We first learned about Hegel from SoundStage! Eurpoean correspondent Robert Jorgenson via his Frankfurt show report. The solid-state products from this Norwegian company look decidedly low-key, but the sound produced in their room was wonderfully smooth and infinitely easy to listen to. The Hegel H4 amplifier ($9500) drove a pair of Sonus Faber Electa Amator II speakers. The Hegel CPD4 CD player ($4000) is HDCD compatible and looks clean -- only two multi-function buttons on its front panel. The Hegel P4 line-stage preamplifier ($3600) is remote-controlled and also uncluttered. Supra Ply 2.0 speaker cables and simple homemade interconnects finished the system. None of the products on musical display used tubes, but listeners may never have guessed.
