SoundStage! Standout Room - Melos/Pipedreams

c_medium_pipedream.jpg (18340 bytes)SoundStage! was treated to an exclusive offsite pre-Show demo of the Melos/Pipedreams "super-system" that featured the Pipedreams 134 speakers (which use 134 drivers, include two subwoofers per channel and cost up to $80,000 depending on finish), big Melos Triode Diva amplifiers (800Wpc, $25,000 per pair), Music Director preamp ($4800 balanced, $3795 single-ended), Glass Symphonietta 24/96 CD/DVD player ($1395) and BAE-manufactured FMS cabling. However, the Show system at the Alexis Park, which featured the smaller Pipedreams 94 speakers (approximately $15,000 per pair without subwoofers), Triode Soloist amplifiers (400Wpc, approximately $10,000 per pair), Music Director preamp, Glass Symphonietta CD/DVD player and FMS cables, got the nod for downright spooky imaging at a much lower price.

The Pipedreams speakers are a true line source that throw a huge soundstage and make sitting rigidly in the sweet spot a thing of the past. The Melos amps use EI 519 pentode power tubes -- and lots of them. Both the Triode Diva and Triode Soloist models can be purchased configured as single-ended amplifiers for the same price.
